How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: Addiction Expert’s New Book for Parents

CASA founder Joseph A. Califano’s latest book helps parents keep their kids away from drugs and alcohol.

“Every American child will be offered alcohol, cigarettes, addictive prescription pills, marijuana, other illegal drugs, or a number of these substances before they graduate from high school. Many will get such offers while in middle school. And most will get such offers on numerous occasions.” So says the preface of How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents, a new parenting book by adolescent addiction expert Joseph A. Califano, Jr. Luckily, studies show that a child who gets to age 21 without smoking, using drugs or abusing alcohol is far less likely to get in trouble with them during his lifetime. But for parents, this poses the million-dollar question: “How do I get my kid to age 21 without experimenting with drinking or drugs?”

The answers – or at least effective suggestions – can be found in How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid. Author Califano, a father of 5, is the founder of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) and a pioneer of the United States’ anti-smoking campaign. How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid is based on research CASA has conducted since its establishment in 1992, and gives parents the tips they need to succeed in helping keep their children away from drugs and alcohol. From recognizing the risks that make kids vulnerable, to empowering children to make safe and healthy decisions, readers of Califano’s latest book will learn the ins and outs of protecting their families and preventing substance abuse and addiction.

Why should parents heed Califano’s advice? Because “as a parent, you are the most influential source of information your child has,” writes the author. “Talking to your child about smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and using other drugs is what's most likely to make a difference in whether your child gets into these things. Teenagers who learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are much more likely never to try them. [You can’t] rely on your child's school, or some program, or anyone else to educate your children about the dangers of substance abuse.”

    i m UPKAR from india my age is 29,& in india there’s so many youth taken drugs & some young boys r stolen things 4rm home thts only for drugs. Before Three Years i’m also taking alcohol + smokes everyday,too much.but then I meet with NGO who doing work for youths, blinds ,for people who r n jail .& yhe moving behind this mega event is SHRI ASHUTOSH JI MAHARAJ . when i go there I saw there r so many youth doing social activities, meditations,the young boys & girls doing work for our country without taking money from (Divya jyoti Jagrati Sansthan – new delhi – INDIA.) & shri ashutosh ji maharaj (saint-Massenger)change my life totally when he given me DIVINE KNOWLEDGE.and now I’m also doing without taking work for youth . this NGO is never talking about money (every thing is free of cost ) there r so many youngsters who r free from drugs by Ashutoshji maharaji;s grace only. …… so I request to you you contact ,I believe 101% result you saw in your country youths .. in more less than time , you never expected.

    Hello. I recall hearing that the State of Wyoming Department of Health purchased copies for all of their public libraries. I am not sure if there is a concerted strategy being developed by the folks at CASA, but certainly you have exactly the right idea!
