Television series based on interventionist William Banks returns for a second season.
Cable Networks are in high gear again this summer as they enthusiastically launch old and new series to woo fickle viewers. The A&E drama "The Cleaner" returns this month for a second season with episodes about addiction and the efforts of extreme interventionist William Banks (played by Benjamin Bratt) to get addicts clean.
If you're not familiar with the show, here’s the premise:
William Banks, a recovering addict, once struck up a deal with God promising that if he succeeded in getting off drugs for good, he'd help others do the same. Banks is hired by family members and loved ones to locate, rescue and help current addicts consumed by alcohol and drugs, and then persuade them (with often relentless and intense methods) to check in for treatment.
"The Cleaner" is loosely based on the true life story of Warren Boyd, who is a Co-Executive Producer of the series. By the time Boyd had reached the age of 32, he had 9 DUI convictions and had spent 5 years in prison. He was addicted to alcohol and cocaine, and had been in and out of 26 rehab programs. Because of his own strong addictions and difficulties overcoming them, he knows that extreme actions are sometimes necessary to break an addict’s cycle of abuse. Boyd has spent the last 20 years of his life as a dedicated counselor to numerous clients, and knows the hard road that is often traveled by an addict.
The show encapsulates the successes and failures Banks wrestles with as he tries to “save” those people who at first don’t want to be saved. It highlights what addiction really is, how much damage it can cause in an addict’s life and how much it takes to choose recovery.
"The Cleaner" airs Tuesdays at 10 pm ET on A&E. To view the first episode, visit www.aetv.com/the-cleaner.
